Why should users over 16 stone (100kg) not use standard chairs with gas lifts?

The HSE advises that users over 16 stone should only use chairs with gas cylinder lifts if they have been specially designed to accommodate them. Our Max Range chairs and 24 hour chairs have been FIRA S level tested to accommodate the larger frame and withstand 24 hour use. We have identified the maximum weight limit for individual chairs where this exceeds the standard.

Some of our Operator, Task and Manager/Executive Range chairs are also suitable for users of up to 23 stone. Please check individual chair descriptions for details or contact us for assistance.

I am purchasing a chair for a taller person, what features should it have to ensure comfort and safety?

Look for a chair offering height adjustable arm rests and a taller back with easy height adjustment. A deeper seat is better and a seat slider can extend the seat away from the back thereby accommodating longer legs. As taller may also mean heavier, you should check the weight capacity of the seat mechanism and opt for a mechanism tested to FIRA S level if catering for an individual over 16 stone or a chair from the Max Range if heavier than 23 stone.

I have to buy a chair for a larger person, what should I do?

There is no good reason why anyone above average height or weight should be sitting in an uncomfortable or dangerous seat. It may be a sensitive situation, but it is important to ensure that the type of chair you purchase can offer comfort as well as durability without looking significantly different to your other office chairs. This may also be a health and safety issue as sitting in a seat which does not fit you can lead to posture problems and reduced productivity.

Our standard seat mechanisms comfortably accommodate users of up to 16 stone (100kg) and where weights exceed this it is important to choose a mechanism tested to FIRA S level. All our chairs for users above average weight give a recommended maximum user weight.

Also check carefully the dimensions of the chair to ensure that it will accommodate the larger figure and decide whether you need any of the following:

  • a taller back
  • a deeper seat
  • seat slider
  • height adjustable arms
  • foot rest (those of larger frame may not be taller than average)
Why are some chairs available in several days while others take longer?

Chairs available as an express delivery item are pre-made and available from stock as items requiring some self-assembly. Those which take longer are generally being built to your specification by our UK manufacturers.
